DAVID DONZELLA
COMMISSIONER FOR ZONE 6
Over the past year, Central
Broward Water Control District has completed a major construction
project designed to improve drainage throughout the Western C-11 Basin. A
number of culverts have been increased in size to allow for unobstructed flow
of storm waters to the C-11 Canal (Griffin Road Canal). The District allocated nearly $1 million for these improvements without raising taxes.
Our outreach program
continues to provide valuable information to residents and students about our greatest
natural resource: WATER. Phosphorus (an ingredient found in fertilizer)
continues to be a major concern to our waterways and environment.
Phosphorus can disrupt the delicate Everglades ecosystem. The District
continues to perform water quality tests, monitor results, and participate
in efforts designed to reduce this pollutant’s levels in our lakes and
canals. Our education programs reach many students and residents and make a
positive impact on our District’s environment. The good news is that over
the past several years phosphorus levels in some of the District’s canals
have decreased by 30%. Congratulations to the residents of the District for
their environmental conscientiousness! The District encourages all
residents to continue to be good environmental stewards of our Earth.
I encourage you to visit
the Vegetation page on our web site and click on the “Anglers” link
to learn about the District’s use of grass eating carp as part of our
waterway cleaning program. If you accidentally catch one of these fish,
please return it to the water so it can continue to do its job of cleaning
our lakes and canals of unwanted grass and algae.
If I or any of my fellow
Commissioners can be of further assistance to you, please contact the
District at 954-432-5110. Our goal is to keep you informed of how your tax
dollars are being used – whether it be for capital improvements or for
educational outreach to the community. We are here to serve YOU!
